An Old Man Looks At Anime

I was listening to EP 96 and everyone started talking about Kiki’s Delivery Service or Majo no Takkyūbin. This happens to be my favorite of the Miyazaki films. “What, you’re kidding Noshgard, with all of the great films like Mononoke, Spirited Away and Nausicaa”? What can I say – I love witches! Anyway, so they were discussing Kiki and I had a moment of clarity. I think I was inspired by Kimiko although, please don’t ask me to explain how it all fits together. Where was I? Oh yeah – Kyoko Mogami’s chest!

So I’m listening to Ep 96 and they are talking Kiki and boom – Skip Beat pop’s into my mind! I had to analyze why this would happen? First off, Kiki is a feisty character trying to find her way in a new town. She is dealing with the trials and tribulations of adolescence while asserting her independence. She is very lonely and wants to prove to the world she has something to offer. Another thing I find in Kiki is that she tries too hard, gets very frustrated when things don’t go right and then suffers setbacks from the outcome.

Kyoko in Skip beat or Sukippu Bito, is not unlike Kiki. Kyoko follows the love of her life to the city only to find out that he considers her a meal ticket. She is very lonely yet chooses to prove to the world she is better than the loser that left her. And, like Kiki, Kyoko has a very bad temper and does not handle the stresses of her new life well.

In both of these anime, I am enchanted by watching these female characters be strong, cute, grow and exhibit that you can accomplish your dreams if you stick with them. Sure, there are no boobs or swords but they are great fun without blood.

Give them both a try!
