The addicts friends and kind staff over at Florida SuperCon have been more than helpful with panels and so on and we are looking forward to being in attendance and covering the convention. We will have a table from which we may be offering special merchandise (check out what you can get at any time from our store) and running various competitions.
We had a great time last year and we hope to offer more of the same and new events!
Want to go out to dinner with the addicts? Let us know you’ll be at Supercon and that you’re interested in saying hi on our forums.
Our panels for Supercon are:
Friday | 7:00pm-8:30pm | At Anime Panels 400 | The Great Cosplay Dating Game
A quickly growing favorite among con-goers this panel puts three bachelorettes competing for one lucky bachelor and three bachelors competing for one lucky bachelorette. Come 30 minutes early to sign-up to be a part of the game. Participants must be in cosplay, must be willing to adlib and must be ready to have fun!
Saturday | 12:00pm-1:00pm | At Anime Events 100 | The Best Anime You’ve Never Seen
A standard panel revised every year with yet more anime you haven’t seen. Come, sit back, relax, and get a sampling of great anime that is sure to please even the most veteran of palates.
Saturday | 3:30pm-5:00pm | At Anime Events 100 | Traveling to Japan
Chiaki keeps going to Japan and so she keeps doing this panel. Informative, sometimes funny, and sometimes weird, this panel is a crowd pleaser for anyone who has even thought of traveling to the land of the rising sun.
Saturday | 8:00pm-9:00pm | At Anime Panels 400 | The Girl’s Guide to Con Going
What does the late time mean for this panel? That this ain’t your gramma’s guide to con-going. Slightly later means that Kimiko and Chiaki may be a little off the cuff and a little risque. Head out and be ready for something informative and fun.
Sunday | 2:00pm-3:00pm | At Anime Events MACC 1 | Anime Video Games **Debut**
We’re very excited to be debuting this panel at Florida Super Con. It will cover some of the best anime video games which we will never see here in America, focusing on region-free systems.

Metrocon held it’s successful year nine this past weekend from June 17th-18th 2011. The largest con in Florida (fluttering around 7,000 attendees, official numbers have yet to be released but if past trends hold true it should be in that ballpark) Metrocon certainly does not disappoint.
While it admittedly lacks some of the charm which smaller cons possess such as the luxury of time with guests, the ability to walk the narrow corridors without bumping into props, and not having to walk into the dealer’s room with earplugs Metrocon is the pinnacle of the biggest and the best in Florida.
Metrocon is unafraid of throwing it’s weight around when it comes to getting guests. This year there were a gauntlet of top-bill names such as voice actor Crispin Freeman and the author of Zombie survival series Max Brooks. Where some large cons rest on their laurels Metrocon keeps raising the bar for who they can get and delivers year to year.
Another area which Metrocon has put a lot of hard work and time into is their events. From contests such as the AMV Contest, the Picture This photo contest (which Kimiko won an Honorable Mention in), the singing competition known as Anime Idol (Kimiko and Chiaki won Best Technical), and of course cosplay competitions this con has no shortage of passing out prizes. The Addicts ran our own contest in which the winner will be announced on episode 89 to be aired on Sunday the 26th. But the contests are not their only events. Those things many conventions posses some variety of. Metrocon has a yearly fire show, yes we said fire, where people put on a show involving all kind of combustion and flames. The Chess Match is also a big hit, with human chess “pieces” battling it out for some kind of overall story domination.
The one event which was, in our opinions, a bit of a letdown was the Masquerade. We were sold on the promise of ballroom dancing as it was said in the program, thinking this was supported by the program we paid the $10.00 fee to get into the event. When we got there it was, unfortunately, a paid rave. There was no ballroom, or even ballroom-esque music. Other conventions which have a paid masquerade justify the cost by supplying food to guests, or offering something exclusive. Oddly, not the case here. We were told there was eventually a pretty good show, but we didn’t stick it out to see it. We wondered how Metrocon justifies charging money to see a show when they offer all other shows and their rave for free.
But, many people like the masquerade, and if that was the only point at which we were disappointed with the events it should really go to show you how high-quality the programming is at this convention.
Speaking of programming we held four panels which all went awesome. The Metrocon staff was amazing. Checking in before and after every panel making sure we had everything we needed. Though we were still surprised to find that they still had only one panel room with technology for projecting a laptop and it was a relatively small flat-panel TV, rather than upgrading to projectors on at least two rooms like most larger cons have. It was still nice to have and to have it working right. Better some technology that you’re sure works than technology which fails.
Overall, we can’t stress enough how much fun we had. This convention is really at the top of as good as conventions get. Every year we go we severely enjoy ourselves and we can’t wait to see it grow in the future.
If you can only make it to one convention in Florida I would put Metrocon right at the top of the list. Ample hotels in the surrounding area within walking distance makes it a great location. Plus the convention center can handle the size of the con with room to grow. There are TONS of stuff to do which will please everyone, a huge dealers room, massive artists alley (by comparison to most cons), and great guests. Just remember to eat, sleep, and drink lots of water (it’s free at the water fountains) to avoid collapsing from exhaustion due to the massive amounts of fun you will have.

From Mr Serious Face: In your guys opinion, what, besides a good story, makes a successful magical girl anime, like Card Captor Sakura, Nanoha, and Madoka? And with that in mind, what makes a bad magical girl anime, like Ultimate Girls, Moetan, and Suite Precure?

Nanoha (2004 – original series)

*Spoilers for BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad*
High school, a time of emotions and finding who you really are. Three years ago at the tender age of 14, I entered high school, not really knowing what to expect. I was considered a nerd by many of my peers and it’s true I was, even beyond that, I liked being called one. I had a few friends that I could call “friends”, people I could trust and depend on.
I also had to deal with a minor form of depression, “artists” depression is what I called it. I always wanted to be a writer, and more so I wanted to write manga and anime. Now I know a westerner writing anime is nearly impossible, hell, I do not even know a single foreigner who has. It was my pipe-dream and still is to this day, but to go with that dream, came a disease. A disease I was able to cure with leaving my world, my transportation? Anime.
I did not know it but I used anime as an escape into other worlds, worlds far better than my own. Now, my world was not bad par say, I have a nice house, my parents do not abuse me, and like I said have good friends. No, my “life” was not bad but my view was, I hated my life, I really did. I was a 14 year old Hispanic nerd, who weighed 102lbs and was only 5′ 2” , no girl bothered to look at me and I couldn’t blame them. I lived my whole life with my head down, and to this day sometimes still do. My only real passion was anime and music, the music I listened to and the anime I watched truly saved my life.
As I listened to my favorite bands Pixies, Nujabes , and The Smiths my life started to change. I became so infatuated with the music, I stopped caring about how crappy I felt. This music soon started blending with the anime I used to escape from my life. One of my favorite anime series Samurai Champloo became my key into the blending of anime and music. The beautiful sounds of Nujabes to the almost real back drop of feudal Japan, and not to mention likeable characters Mugen, Jin, and Fuu changed who I was at my core. I started feeling much better but then it came back, the sadness, the loneliness even when surrounded by my friends. I needed another remedy, then I heard a song called Moon on the Water. What was this beautiful song and why did it resonate with me so much?
I found the origin of that song, BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. Now some of you may have watched Beck, the Anime Addicts themselves reviewed it and gave it a 5/5. BECK was something I had never seen before, an anime about real people trying to achieve their goal. Tanaka Yukio, a fellow 14-year old, was trying to become someone, break the norm he had lived his whole life. I immediately connected with his plight, I was trying to do the same. I was trying to not live with my sadness, and try and become someone, someone happy and strong. As Tanaka learned the guitar, I wrote my heart out, every chord Tanaka played was a page I wrote. I knew my “manga” (as I can and could not draw) was not the best but I continued on, writing different genres using Yukio’s determination as my own. Then I heard the song, that started this whole ordeal, “Moon on the Water”, and it was sung by two teens skinny dipping in a pool.
The song resonated not only in my ears but my soul, every note was a spark within my heart. I soon felt strong, and knew that no matte what I had to finish what I started. As Tanaka joined the band BECK, I was talking with a friend of mine whom loves manga and anime (thanks Jeannie) and more so, loves writing about it. My writing soon became better and Tanaka became a singer.
Yukio Tanaka, sang the song “Face”, and I cried. I did not cry because the song moved me (it did but not to that extreme) I cried because Tanaka became a someone. I knew I had to do the same, I pushed my self harder, and harder. I wrote a 7 volume manga series titled “The Million Man” in a five subject notebook. The Million Man, a manga about an international fugitive with a million dollar bounty ( it seemed a high enough money value at the time) but also a humanitarian trying to help any he could. I finished the Million Man as BECK landed a gig at “Greatful Sound 5”. Tanaka was nearly there, nearly the someone he wanted to become.
As Yukio Tanaka took the Third Stage, my heart was in my throat it beating almost as loud as the headphones hooked up to my computer. Tanaka then hit the rift I knew all to well, “I’ve Got a Feeling” by the Beatles and for once in my life I felt a surge of happiness. Tanaka belted out the god-like hooks of Paul McCartney and as each member of BECK took the stage I felt my heart growing larger. Every song afterwards, made me stronger and happier, happier than I had ever been. As the last episode came around, I had become someone I could respect. I wrote and still do, daily, I even started learning the bass guitar ( what can I say? Taira was too cool). My life became whole and I beat the sickening depression I had, all thanks to BECK an anime about a band, named after a dog.
Thanks for reading and please, if you have any life changing stories feel free to leave them below, and most of all LONG LIVE BECK!!!!!
Three junior high girls: Shidou Hikaru, Ryuuzaki Umi, and Hououji Fuu, meet at a school trip to Tokyo Tower. Suddenly, a bright light envelops them and they find themselves transported to the fantasy land of Cephiro. Princess Emeraude brought them there to save the land from the evil High Priest Zagato. With the guidance of Guru Clef, and the help of their new mascot the bouncy, rabbit-like, uber-cute Mokona, they are sent on a journey to become the Magic Knights in order to save the princess, and the land.
Review:
Alright, as always it’s time to get the specifics out of the way. Magic Knight Rayearth is a 20 episode series which came out in Fall of 1994 and ran through to 1995. It was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha based off an original manga by CLAMP which was three volumes running from 1993-1995. There IS a follow-up manga and series to Magic Knight Rayearth, aptly titled Magic Knight Rayearth 2, but I am not reviewing that because I have not seen it. Makes sense, right? Both the manga and the series have been licensed in America, so if you want to get your hands on it, it should be pretty easy.
This series is hailed for following the first arc of the manga relatively closely. Which should be pleasing to many manga fans out there.
This anime feels like an RPG come to life on a screen. If Lodos war was D&D Rayearth is the spitting image of every JRPG fans game. Cephiro is a fantasy world full of large crystals, flying fish (literally, flying), gryphons, mages, and of course magical girls. The characters are as equally cliché as the world. Fuu is the quiet shy girl with glasses, Umi the entitled rich girl who seems to initially care only about getting home in time for her fencing tournament, and the spunky tomboy Hikaru.
So, yeah, the series starts out exactly as it looks. The girls learn of their powers, get into some battles, and fall into some clichés along the way. But it becomes significantly more than that. As is CLAMP’s style often times the series is full of forlorn love, taboo relationships and heartache. If you’re a girl, this addition really helps make the series IMHO.
The major con of this series is the animation. Where the character designs seem enchanting and different in the manga they just seem jarring and odd. Their faces are angular and odd looking and their eyes take the “big eyed anime character” to a whole new extreme. The animation is also poor, even by 1990s standards, the low frame rate makes the action sequences (something many Shojo series lack) clunky and odd. This is barely excusable just because these action series serve more to provide a catalyst for the emotional storm brewing in the series than a flashy soiree. Music is average, about what you’d expect.
What is best about this series is the ending. Magic Knight has a fantastic, unexpected, and emotional ending that you REALLY do not see coming. This series is the exact opposite of what we normally talk about, good series that end up bad. This series starts out with you expecting a little, and it ends up giving you a lot.
Overall, it’s a shojo magical girl anime, so there’s really so much you can expect . But generally people looking for the high-budget action sequences are going to stay away from this anyways. On a magical girl show scale, I’d give it a 4+. But this isn’t a magical girl only review site, so overall it gets a 3.5, slightly above average.
Anime music videos, or AMVs, yeah I’ve made a few in my day but they were nothing too fancy. None the less one of my favorite things is watching them. Most AMVs can be made with any slew of programs, though for the very high quality ones I find are generally made with Adobe Premiere/Adobe After Effects.
Just for fun, I thought I’d list my top 10 favorite AMVs of all time. How did I choose my list? A combination of technical skill, timing, song to anime choice, storytelling, and overall quality. Watch and suggest your own in the comments below!

In this, my first video blog for the AAA Podcast (no, I will not call it a Vlog, that’s stupid) I talk about 5 of my favorite anime villains. Give me some feedback. Tell me what you like, what you don’t like, etc.
Shonen anime and manga is the biggest form of the medium, period. The anime series Bleach for example makes up half the revenue and watches for Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” Saturday nights. This almost constantly stream of money comes from one thing, teenage boys. Now, I am a teenage boy myself ( I am 16) and yes I do not mind watching a kick-ass fight scene, but when is enough enough? Everywhere I look there is a picture of some muscle-bound Neanderthal carrying a huge ax, or some scrawny teenager with a massive sword, or the worst of them all, a big-breasted teenage girl wearing little to no clothing. When is the anime industry going to grow up and realize the anime fans of say 10 years ago is now closing in on their 20’s or 30’s? The 15 year old who watched every episode of Yu-Yu-Hakusho is roughly 25 now. To all the anime companies, please let deep thought provoking anime get made, or we as fans will stop watching.
Well this rant hopefully did not offend anyone. On a side-note I plan on doing this “rant time” blogs a lot more often, if you have a hate of something anime or manga related let me know in either the comments or as a PM on the forums.
