Anyone that knows me will tell you that I love anime, and I also love music. With that being said, K-ON! would be perfect for me, right?
Wellllll.....
K-ON! is the story of Yui Hirasawa, a high school freshman who tries to join a club but realizes she has no special talents whatsoever. Meanwhile, Mio Akiyama and Ritsu Tainaka, two other freshmen try to save the light music club (Kei-on-bu) but do not have enough members. So they begin to advertise, trying to obtain new members. They eventually catch the attention of Tsumugi Kotobuki, another freshman who happens to play the piano (keyboard). So now the light music club has a keyboardist, a bassist, and a drummer... all they need is a guitarist! The clock ticks and finally the club catches the attention of Yui, who is still looking for a club. Yui goes to the room, they insist she stays (even tho she's never played an instrument before), and eventually she joins the club. The anime continues the same way any high school anime would... club activities, festivals, new members, and a big dose of comedy mixed with a little bit of drama and fan-service for good measure.
Now for my review...
I'm going to start off by making this statement. I DO NOT HATE THIS SHOW. But at the same time, I don't really love it either. Apart from what others say about it, i don't find the music all that bad, and the show's strong points for me are when they are playing the music. But that's the problem. I would say aside from the OP and ED for this show, probably about 20% of this show is actually performing or playing music. The rest is all filler essentially, everything from tea time to the obligatory beach episode, there's very little music involved. This fact is kind of depressing, especially since i think music anime is an interesting combination that we don't see alot of (BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad comes to mind) and when we do, it's alot like K-ON! in which it has lots of filler to make up for NO MUSIC.
I'm gonna be fair and say that i enjoyed the songs when i heard them, and a few have made it into my iTunes library and my iPod subsequently. But i hope that if they continue this show (which i see they have quite a few seasons) they bring me more music and a little less other crap. Some more balance would make this show ten times better in my opinion.
So there it is, my review on K-ON! If you have another opinion, make it known and comment below! Hope you enjoyed!
