Anime Friends?

Has your anime fandom ever made yourself a new friend? I know that for me, despite my reluctance to tell people I am a fan it has defiantly proven to be a common ground and help break the ice with new people who have been more keen to reveal there fandom than myself.

I know some people that are into anime in rl but we are not friends
I keep my addiction firmly hidden for in rl it becomes more of a burden that chains me .people get preconception and I have to then explain myself. in there eyes anime becomes my identity ( its like when you tell them you know how to use a computer and suddenly you're the designated IT guy )and there are other problems. I ones tried to get some friends into it but when they saw the dark side of anime they freaked out so much that they cut me cold and never spoke to me again.
there are like 500 anime fans in the entire country 200 if you - the narutards so its not really a conversation starter

I know exactly what you mean. I always keep my fandom close to my chest. Unless it is a very good friend who I have known for a long time, or someone else brings it up first. I have made a good friend that way the later though, changing the oil on a T34 becomes much more enjoyable when we have a shared topic! But yes, I have seen evidence of what you say first hand. It is the same thing that makes me have my iPod that bit quieter if I have got anime tunes on.

I took a gamble and showed a good friend high school of the dead, not thinking about how it is rather inappropriate for a newbie. He may still not watch anime, but he is more receptive and I havn't gained hentai boy reputation. Great Success!

I showed my non- anime friend Lucky Star. She liked it. Though I doubt she understood the significance of Konata's conversations about Otaku culture.

So I guess you guys won't show someone "My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute" or "Welcome to the NHK" anytime soon. lol
