So many good ones. i know I'll forget a bunch.

Katanagatari had an epic ending with a great twist. One of the best.

Macross Frontier had probably the best Final episode of a show I've ever seen.

Orphen's ending gets props for originality for sure.

Angel beats is probably one of the saddest touching endings I've seen

To Heart ~Remember my Memories~ had a really sweet touching ending

Basilisk had an amazing ending

Shakugan no Shana 3's ending was one of the best in recent memory.

I loved Basilisk. I only barely misses the cut for my top 5.

Madoka Magica and Steins;Gate from last year.
Ga-rei zero is quite good, Seto no hanayome as well

I heard penguindrum had a strong ending as well

the one that's so forced and out of nowhere that tried to do too much? I was liking this anime until that final episode. That ending is weak, especially compared with the way they finish up the episode prior. There's no resolution, just some scenarios without any emotional build-ups.

Say what you will about Angel Beats. I still cry every time I see that ending., and it wasn't just the love confession, it was the graduation too. I love the hell out of that show.

Also thought of a couple more.

Shiki - it ended on a pretty heavy note. It wasn't happy at all and I loved that. I have the Blue rays preordered, and I can't wait to rewatch it.

Sengoku Basara - One word. Epic

But it would have been better if they wore duct tape.

Hellz yeah! The only thing the real deal had over the duck tape is Norio Wakamoto. No matter how hard I try, even in full costume I'm nowhere near the epic that is Wakamoto

I was thinking, and I remembered Itazurana Kiss. Probably the most conclusive romance out there.
It doesn't just end with the two characters dating in high school. It follow them through their life. Getting married, going to college, and eventually having a child together. I can't think of another anime that did that in such a great way.
My thoughts on the best would be "Metropolis". The Ray Charles song is awesome, plus there's a lot of irony in the fact that it's a love song about people together while the building crumbles apart around the protagonists.

Just classic in many ways!!
