Re: Chrysanthemum Throne, I might have missed this but did you mention that the Emperor is technically also the head of the Shinto religion? As such, he has many ceremonial duties, both in public and also behind closed doors. From what little I know, some of those “religious” ceremonies are archaic at best and sometimes inhumane. Just another reason the 82 year old man might want to retire from his “duties”.
